Kelvin Yang, a freshman, has just moved to San Mateo from Taiwan. He used to attend Tsai Hsing High School in Taipei. He came here to study English. “School is much harder over there.” Kelvin had to go to school from 6 a.m. to 5 p.m. and had to take many classes.
Kelvin is sixteen years old and was born on February 4, 1992. He came from Taiwan one month ago and now lives in San Mateo with his legal guardians while his parents still live in Taiwan. He says, “It is a lot more boring here. Taiwan is much more convenient. I need to get used to it.”
His hobbies include shopping and basketball. His favorite team is the Los Angeles Lakers. “Basketball is much bigger than baseball (in Taiwan) while soccer is so-so.” His favorite band is Linkin Park and his favorite movie is Rome Holiday. Kelvin loves comedies and says American music and movies are fairly popular in Taiwan but Taiwanese entertainment is still better liked. He prefers American music though, “Pop music is my favorite but I like hop-hop and jazz.”
Kelvin’s favorite food is tacos. He does not yet drive but would like to. He has a girlfriend back in Taiwan and they have been going out for six months.
His favorite class is ELD taught by Mr. Faber. His favorite subject is math and is currently in Mr. Kryger’s Algebra II class. He likes San Mateo High School much more because it is more interesting than his old school. Kelvin likes that he doesn’t have to wear uniforms because he attended a private school before.
Kelvin plans on going to a nice college, preferably Stanford after he graduates. He will also be going back to Taiwan to visit his friends.

Marcella Arroyo
Marcella Denyse Arroyo comes to us from our state capitol, Sacramento. She has lived in San Mateo since April of last year and is a senior. She used to attend Rosemont High School. “They’re both new but I like San Mateo High School better because the people participate and keep it looking new.” Marcella was born on August 13, 1990. She thinks San Mateo and Sacramento are pretty much equal but, “San Mateo doesn’t have as many malls because Sacramento had four.” She lives with her mother and step dad and her brother. She also has two sisters.
She has a lot of favorite movies and she prefers funny movies. Her favorite band is Paramore, “the best band on the planet.” She doesn’t participate in any sports of clubs because she is lazy. Her favorite class is Mr. Teague’s where she TA’s for him during fifth period. Her favorite subject is math, “because I’m actually good at it” but she is not taking a math class this year.
Marcella likes weird arts and crafts. “I’m addicted to youtube,” she likes to watch, “funny stuff like people’s blogs.” Her favorite color is orange even though she doesn’t wear it often. She has six piercing on her tongue, nose, eyebrow, cartilage, and her ears, which are gauged. She is now at a size eight but is trying to get to a size zero. Gauge sizes decrease and after zero it goes into fractions.
Marcella is moving back to Sacramento after graduation. She is probably going to an automotive school.

Joseph Perry
Newly on the market, Joe Perry joins us from Hillsdale High School. He may look like a girl (as he points out), but do not be fooled, he is in fact a writing, cross-dressing, sleeping, gaming, Legend of Zelda-loving boy. Yes, he is a man. And he's looking for a woman. Joe moved from the Hillsdale area his junior year but did not transfer to San Mateo High until this semester. He really likes San Mateo and thinks, "it's just awesome really." He lives in San Mateo with his two sisters who happen to be twins in kindergarten.
He doesn't really watch movies but does enjoy indie music. "It's the best music ever!" He loves everything about San Mateo and is taking three band classes. He plays the trombone and has been learning for seven years.
Joe's future goal is to "stay alive." He really loves writing and he wants to go back to it. Say hello to this borderline green-haired boy in the halls and give him a great big bearcat hug!

Andrada Deaconescu
Andrada has many nicknames; her favorite being "Dizzy" given to her by her friends because she tends to be all over the place. She was born on May 31, 1990 and is a junior in high school. Back in Romania, she was an active member of graffiti club, which is a legal institution over there. She enjoys playing basketball and tennis and her favorite actors are Christian Bale and James McAvoy as well as Romanian actor Horahu Meloiele. She loves punk rock music, although her favorite band is a hip-hop based one. In her spare time she likes listening to music, hanging out with her friends, playing sports, and taking photographs.
She prefers California over Romania because she thinks it's different "in every single way. The people, the school, the mentality, the way it looks, everything." She lived in an apartment in Romania but now enjoys living in a spacious house in Foster City. She really misses her boyfriend Andre in Romania and is unofficially engaged to him.
She would like to become a journalist after she graduates from college. She doesn't plan on moving back to Romania anytime soon but she will be going back there to visit her friends and family.

Oscar Ramirez
Oscar Ramirez is a 15-year-old sophomore from Mexico. He was born on October 1, 1992. Seemingly shy at first, he had a lot to say about his move to the United States. He moved from Mexico last year and he loves living in the U.S. because "it has more opportunities." When he was in Mexico, he lived on a ranch. "I used to ride horses. It was one of my hobbies over there." He now lives in San Mateo with two of his brothers while another one of his brothers lives in Mexico.
His other interests include soccer. "My favorite team is Guadalajara. It's a Mexican team." He isn't in any clubs but he used to be on a sports team until he quit. Oscar's favorite movie is The Mist and although he couldn't pick a favorite music artist, his favorite music is Hip Hop and Rap. He really likes his ELD class that is taught by Mr. Faber.
Oscar really wants to finish high school and go to college so he can get a good job.
Welcome Oscar!

Sasha Chiu
Sasha enjoys many extracurricular activities such as attending the survey club. She just donated her hair to Locks of Love, something she has been wanting to do for a while. She likes to shop and go to crazy, wild parties. When asked what her favorite movie was, she responded with "I have so many, oh my god," but finally settled with two holiday favorites, Halloween and Christmas Carol. Her favorite type of music is classical but her favorite musicians are Hilary Duff, The Spice Girls, and Britney Spears. Sasha is also a vegetarian and hasn't eaten meat since February of this year. She aides for Mr. Faber's ELD class and really enjoys it. "I love Mr. Faber because he's nice. He has a large attention span and a great amount of patience."
She lives in San Mateo now with her mother and her stepfather. She enjoys living here better than living in Canada. She thinks the weather is better and it's more diverse. On the differences between Canada and the U.S., Sasha thinks "Canada is more liberal and democratic. There is free health care and gay marriage is allowed." She loves San Mateo High School because of the campus. "I like how we embrace all different cultures and I love the spirit." Sasha attended Etobicoke Collegiate Institute before transferring to San Mateo High.
Sasha plans on going to college, preferably San Diego State, and then getting married. She wants to adopt two kids and she hopes to get twins.
